< Vorige Philip Roth Volgende >

Philip Roth is one of my favourite contemporary authors. Every year or so he publishes a new novel. And every time it is a special delight to get the book, find a good chair and let myself be carried away. It baffles me how Roth can portray a person as fully as he does. It is totally beyond me how he can present 3 of 5 or more persons, each very different, with as much layers and complexity as the protagonist. His latest book, The Humbling, is no exeption. This portrait alludes to two topics that Roth is concerned with, i.e the way age slowly takes a person apart and the disappearance of the role of literature.
